Using the Bevel and Emboss Style

When I think of the bevel and emboss style the first thing that comes to my mind is the button. So lets start off and make a button.

Start by making the outline of the button, it is a basic circle with some holes in it.

Now lets do some beveling and embossing. Bring up the layer styles for the layer with the button outline and click on the Bevel and Emboss selection. Make the adjustments to the settings following the image to the right for guidance. The biggest changes from the default settings is the Shading - set them to normal and for the shadow color choose a darker version of your button color.

Now, click on the Contour box and bring up the rounded contour. This will make the button more rounded and dimensional.

Click OK

Already, our button outline is looking like a button. Right now it is a very basic, generic button.

To add some more dimension to your button, use the marque tool to select a circle on top of the button. Add a new layer and then pour a darker version of color on top of the button. With the new layer selected, click on clipping mask and your button holes will reappear.

To stop here, add some gluassion blur to the dark inner circle and you will have a nice generic button. But, we are not going to stop here, so back up past the blurring and go on.

With the layer selected that has the inner darker circle, bring up the layers styles and use the image to the right to adjust your settings. Be sure to click the Down button on the Direction option. Also, in the Shading the opacity of the highlight has been reduced to remove some of the white. There are other adjustments made from the default settings so look closely.

Now, click on the Texture box and bring up the Texture options of the Bevel and Emboss Style. Choose the texture that you like the most for the inner portion of your button and adjust the size and depth until it looks good to you. There are no right and wrong settings here, you are just embellishing your button in your own way.

So, now our button is looking good. But, it is bare and needs some dressing. On the next page we will put some string in it using the Bevel and Embossing style.
